Cholargos

Area Overview, Quality of Life & Real Estate Market 2025

Location & Historical Background

Cholargos is located in the Northern Sector of Athens and serves as the seat of the Municipality of Papagou-Cholargos. The area is named after the ancient municipality of Cholargos, birthplace of the Athenian statesman Pericles. A large statue of Pericles at the entrance of the suburb symbolizes its connection to historical heritage. Although the ancient settlement was likely located further from today's Cholargos, the modern suburb honors its past through its name and local landmarks.

Green Spaces & Nature

Cholargos offers an abundance of green spaces. The Cholargos Grove and the neighboring Papagou Grove are ideal for outdoor activities and relaxation. Additionally, Mount Hymettus to the east provides easy access to hiking trails. It is considered one of the most peaceful suburbs of Athens, offering a natural escape within city limits.

Everyday Life & Recreation

Cholargos maintains a lively community atmosphere with plenty of options for shopping and entertainment. Democracy Square is the social hub, featuring cafes, restaurants, and shops. Nearby Cyprus Square caters to families, offering a playground and quiet pedestrian streets. Small shopping areas and neighborhood stores serve residents' daily needs.

The municipality actively promotes cultural and sports programs. The Papagou-Cholargos Cultural, Sports & Environmental Organization offers facilities such as a municipal gym, tennis and basketball courts, and an athletic track. It also supports specialized activities like fencing. Seasonal open-air cinemas, such as "Artemis" in Papagou and the Cholargos municipal cinema, enrich local culture. There is also an active organization supporting people with disabilities, contributing to a strong sense of community.

Transportation & Access

Cholargos is exceptionally well-connected. The "Cholargos" metro station (Line 3 - Blue) offers direct access:

  • To Athens city center (Syntagma) in just 7 stops (~15 minutes),

  • To "Eleftherios Venizelos" Airport in ~25 minutes,

  • To key hubs like Ampelokipoi, University, Monastiraki, and Piraeus (via transfer).

The station is located on Mesogeion Avenue, the main commercial and transit artery.

Bus Lines The area is served by multiple bus routes with stops on main roads like Mesogeion, 17th November, Anastasios, and Perikleous. Key lines include:

  • X85 (Syntagma – Airport Express),

  • A5 (Akadimia – Agia Paraskevi),

  • B5, 416, 407, 403, 418, 242 (local and intermunicipal).

These routes provide convenient access both within Cholargos and to nearby areas such as Papagou, Agia Paraskevi, Zografou, and Chalandri.

Road Access Mesogeion Avenue runs through Cholargos and is the primary road axis:

  • Direct link to central Athens (10–15 min drive),

  • Connection to Attiki Odos and the Hymettus Ring Road for access to the airport, national highways, and other suburbs,

  • Easy exit to Katechaki Avenue toward Lycabettus and Kaisariani.

Parking Despite being a busy suburb, Cholargos generally offers good parking conditions, thanks to relatively wide streets and buildings with ground-level garages (especially in Upper Cholargos and Lofos Tsakou).

Education & Infrastructure

Cholargos is a family-friendly area, with a wide range of educational institutions. It hosts many public schools (kindergartens, primary, middle, and high schools) that cover all levels of education. There are also several private tutoring centers and language institutes. The suburb's family-oriented character is reflected in its services (playgrounds, children's cultural events) and the strong sense of safety it provides. It is considered one of the safest suburbs in Athens.
