Location & Historical Background

Patras, the capital of the Achaia regional unit and one of the largest cities in Greece, is located in the northwestern Peloponnese. It is about two and a half hours from Athens and serves as an important port and commercial hub. It is renowned for its historical heritage, its contribution to the Greek War of Independence in 1821, and of course for the famous Patras Carnival, which attracts visitors from all over Greece every year.

Patras has an integrated transportation network serving both residents and visitors, ensuring access to every part of the city, its suburbs, and other areas of Western Greece.

Urban Buses – Patras Urban KTEL

Patras Urban KTEL serves thousands of passengers daily with a fully renewed fleet and a telematics system providing real-time schedule updates. The city’s main areas, universities, port, Rio Hospital, and suburbs are covered by 10 primary routes.

Main lines:

  • 601 / 604 / 605: Connect the historic center (Ermou Street) with the University Hospital of Rio, the Rio district, and Agios Vasileios. Frequent service from early morning to midnight.

  • 901: Runs from the city center (Aratou) to the University and Hospital via Ellinos Stratiotou. Not in service on weekends.

  • 606: Runs from the center to the coastal zone of Proastio – Kastellokampos – Porto Rio.

  • 608: Connects the center with Ano Kastritsi.

  • 501 / 503: Serve Tsoukaleika – Monodendri daily, every 30–40 minutes.

  • 118: Links the new Port of Patras with the Intercity KTEL station, particularly useful for passengers traveling to other cities.

Services:

  • Payment via BUSCARD (prepaid travel card).

  • App with real-time bus tracking.

  • Schedules displayed on info-kiosks and screens at main stops.

Patras Suburban Railway – Hellenic Train

The city has a suburban railway, one of the most reliable and fast modes of transport for students and workers:

  • Routes: Connects Kato Achaia, Agios Vasileios, Kastellokampos, and Patras.

  • Runs approximately every 30 minutes daily.

  • Intermediate stops include Zavlani, Bozaitika, Agios Dionysios, and Agios Andreas.

  • Combined with bus services from Kastellokampos to Rio Hospital and the University of Patras.

Intercity Buses – KTEL Achaia

The Intercity KTEL Achaia operates daily routes to and from Patras:

  • Frequent services to Athens (Kifissos): every 30–60 minutes, approx. 2:30 hrs via Olympia Odos.

  • Routes to Pyrgos, Nafpaktos, Kalavryta, Aetoloakarnania, Ioannina, and Thessaloniki (less frequent).

  • Departure/arrival point: Central Intercity KTEL Station of Achaia, near the port.

Airport Access

Patras is served by Araxos Airport, about 40–45 minutes west of the city, operating mainly during the tourist season:

  • Charter flights to/from European cities (mainly summer).

  • Access by private vehicle or buses from/to the KTEL Achaia station.

Port of Patras

One of Greece’s largest passenger and freight ports, with ferry routes to:

  • Italy (Bari, Ancona, Brindisi)

  • Corfu, Igoumenitsa

It features fully organized passenger facilities, customs, parking, and security.

Private Vehicles & Parking

Car use is common in Patras, especially for commuting to/from suburbs or the University. There is an organized parking system:

  • Municipal parking areas (paid or free, e.g., Patras Marina).

  • Private parking in the city center.

  • Traffic congestion occurs during peak hours on Maizonos, Agiou Nikolaou, and Riga Feraiou streets.

Education & Infrastructure

The city hosts the University of Patras, one of the largest in Greece, with many faculties and a strong student life that shapes the city’s character. There are also public and private schools at all levels, as well as technical schools and IEK institutes.

Real Estate Market

Patras has a dynamic and relatively affordable property market, ideal for both permanent residence and investment, due to its large student population and commercial development.
