Corfu

Αrea Overview, Quality of Life 2025

Location & Historical Background

The island of Corfu is located in the Ionian Sea and is rich in landmarks, culture, and a tradition that dates back over 3,000 years. It is considered one of the greenest islands in Greece, with vibrant flowers and countless olive trees. Corfu is a prime destination for both Greeks and foreigners, especially during the summer season. However, it also attracts visitors during Easter, when locals celebrate with the unique tradition of throwing “botides” (clay pots) from balconies—a custom that dates back to the Venetian era.

Nature & Green Spaces

Corfu is one of the greenest Greek islands, featuring lush vegetation, olive groves, and coastal landscapes. Beaches such as Alykes, Gouvia, Mon Repos, Kontokali, and Kanoni offer ideal conditions for relaxation and cooling off during the summer months.

Daily Life & Entertainment

Corfu offers a vibrant commercial scene, with supermarkets, clothing and footwear shops available both in the city center and in outlying areas. Spianada Square is one of the largest in Europe, while the pedestrian street of Liston is a perfect spot for a stroll and coffee. Nightlife is vibrant, especially in the summer, in areas like Paleokastritsa, Glyfada, and Kontogialos.

Transportation & Accessibility

Corfu has a well-organized transport network serving both residents and visitors. Access to the island is available by air, sea, and land via combined transport methods.

  • Corfu Airport “Ioannis Kapodistrias”: Located about 2 km from the city center, it operates both domestic and international flights, especially during the tourist season.

  • Port of Corfu: Connects the island to mainland Greece (mainly Igoumenitsa and Patras), as well as to Italy.

  • Urban and Intercity Transport:

    • The Urban Bus Service (ASTIKO KTEL) covers nearby areas such as the airport, port, Kanoni, and Mon Repos.

    • The Intercity Bus Service (KTEL Corfu) serves more remote locations like Paleokastritsa, Sidari, Lefkimmi, Acharavi, etc.

    • The most central line is KTEL 15, connecting the airport to Corfu Town and the port.

  • Taxis & Rental Vehicles: There are numerous taxi stands and rental agencies for cars and motorbikes throughout the tourist areas.

  • Boats & Sea Taxis: Provide transport along the coast or excursions to nearby points of interest.

Using a private vehicle is particularly helpful on the island, especially for reaching remote or less accessible areas.

Parking

Parking is generally easy, even during peak hours near the city center.

Education & Infrastructure

Corfu is home to well-regarded public and private educational institutions, as well as Second Chance Schools. The Ionian University offers faculties in Humanities, Environmental Science, Information Science & Informatics, Music & Audiovisual Arts, and Economics.
